Do you have extra fat under your chin that you wish wasn’t there? It’s difficult to get rid of that fat with diet and exercise. For some people, it’s almost impossible. KYBELLA offers a solution. A course of KYBELLA injections can destroy fat cells beneath the chin, destroying that fat for good.
What Is KYBELLA®?
KYBELLA is a fat-busting prescription medication that destroys fat cells in the submental area, which is the area beneath your chin. It can reduce the size of a double chin, or even remove it altogether. And the results are permanent.
How KYBELLA Works
KYBELLA® contains an active ingredient called deoxycholic acid. This substance occurs naturally in the body, helping the body break down and absorb dietary fat. When deoxycholic acid is injected into submental fat—the fat beneath the chin—it destroys the fat cells located there. As the fat cells die off, the cellular debris is reabsorbed into the body. This results in a noticeable reduction in the amount of fat stored under the chin. KYBELLA injections can substantially reduce the size of a double chin to improve the appearance of moderate to severe submental fullness.
How Long Do the Effects of KYBELLA® Last?
Most injectable treatments last about 6 to 12 months, or a little longer if you’re lucky. KYBELLA® is different than other injectables because its effects are permanent. After having a full course of KYBELLA® injections, you won’t need to repeat the treatment. The effects of KYBELLA® are permanent because of the way fat is stored in the body: in fat cells. Once a fat cell is destroyed, it can’t regrow. When you have a course of KYBELLA® injections, submental fat—the fat beneath the chin—is destroyed. It can’t grow back in the same area, no matter how your weight changes. You might gain or lose weight in other parts of your body, but the submental fat that was removed will never grow back.
Where Can You Use KYBELLA?
Currently, KYBELLA is approved for use only in the submental area. It’s not known if KYBELLA® is safe to use in other parts of the body.
Are You a Candidate for KYBELLA?
If you have excessive fat beneath the chin, one of the hardest things in the world is to accept that you can’t diet and exercise it away! It’s where your body naturally stores fat, and it’s often there due to genetics. If you have a double chin and can’t seem to get rid of it, KYBELLA might be a good option. Does any of this sound like something you can relate to?
- You have a double chin (submental fullness) that you’re self-conscious or unhappy about.
- You eat healthy and get exercise but can’t get rid of your double chin.
- You want to get rid of the submental fat but don’t want to have surgery.
If any of these points apply to you, KYBELLA could be the solution!
Who Shouldn’t Use KYBELLA?
There are very few restrictions on who can safely use KYBELLA. If you have submental fat you’d like removed, it’s likely KYBELLA can do it safely and effectively. If you have an infection in the treatment area, you’ll need to wait until the infection clears up before you can have KYBELLA injections. If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, it’s best to avoid having KYBELLA injections. It’s not known if KYBELLA can affect an unborn baby or if it can affect a nursing child.
Your KYBELLA Consultation
Your KYBELLA consultation will take place at a DFW Center for Aesthetics and Cosmetic Surgery office in Plano or Colleyville. At your appointment, you’ll see one of our board-certified and fellowship-trained cosmetic surgeons or Elaine Ver Halen, MPAS, PA-C, both of whom are experienced at administering dermal fillers and injections. You’ll learn more about KYBELLA, how it works, and what the treatment is like. This is a good time to ask any questions you have, so don’t hesitate to ask them if you need more information!
Before Your Treatment
Before receiving any KYBELLA injections, you should let Elaine or your doctor know about any current health problems and any medications you’re taking. This includes both prescription and over-the-counter medications. If you’re taking medications that affect blood clotting, make especially sure that they are aware. This includes prescription medications such as warfarin and over-the-counter drugs like aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs). It’s important that your KYBELLA provider know about these medications because they may affect how you respond to the injections.
What Is KYBELLA Treatment Like?
When you have a KYBELLA session, Elaine or your doctor will start by applying a numbing cream to the treatment area. Next, you’ll receive the injections. You’ll feel some pain or stinging sensations, but thanks to the numbing cream, the sensations are dulled. After a short time, you’ll start to feel a burning sensation in the treatment area. This is the deoxycholic acid working to destroy those fat cells! After the session is over, you can quickly return to your normal activities. You’ll likely feel some pain for a few hours as the KYBELLA continues to do its job. There will be some swelling and redness and perhaps a little bruising, but these will subside shortly.
How Much KYBELLA Do You Need?
At your consultation, you’ll receive a custom treatment plan based on your current chin profile and the results you want to achieve. The more fat you want to remove, the more sessions you’ll need. A course of KYBELLA injections includes two to six sessions at intervals of four to six weeks. Many people start to see results in as few as two sessions, while most see results after three or four.
What Are the Side Effects of KYBELLA?
KYBELLA has some common side effects that are usually mild and temporary. These include:
- Swelling, redness, and pain in the treatment area – This can last two to three weeks.
- A numb feeling in the treatment area
- One or more areas beneath the chin that feel hard to the touch
KYBELLA also has some rare but potentially serious side effects, including:
- Nerve injury in or near the treatment area – This may include nerve injury in the jaw area, which can lead to weakness of facial muscles or an uneven-looking smile.
- Nerve injury that makes it hard to swallow
- Bruising, open sores, or necrosis (cell death) at injection sites
If you experience any of these side effects after having a KYBELLA treatment, call your doctor or healthcare provider for advice.
