Aging is inevitable, but the appearance of aging doesn’t have to be. Skincare treatments such as JUVÉDERM® dermal fillers can help reduce visible signs of aging and restore the youthful appearance of your skin. If you have facial lines or wrinkles, or deep facial folds you’d love to see the back of, JUVÉDERM® may be just the thing to help make them disappear!
What Is JUVÉDERM®?
JUVÉDERM® is collection of dermal filler products made by Allergan™. These injectable treatments are made with hyaluronic acid, a substance that’s naturally present in your skin. Along with elastin and collagen, it helps keep skin hydrated, smooth, full, and youthful. The aging process gradually depletes hyaluronic acid and other substances, contributing to signs of aging such as:
- Dry skin
- Lines and wrinkles
- Skin folds
JUVÉDERM® products help reverse these signs of aging by adding hyaluronic acid back into your skin. As an injectable treatment, it can be added where it’s most needed to reduce the appearance of lines, wrinkles, and deep skin folds. JUVÉDERM® products can even treat nasolabial folds, the deep lines that extend from either side of the nose to the lip area.
What Can Juvéderm Do for You?
The JUVÉDERM® collection of facial fillers includes seven different products. Each is a hyaluronic acid gel, designed to fill in and smooth out lines, wrinkles, and folds in facial skin. JUVÉDERM® products include injectables for lip and cheek augmentation, as well as injectables for nasolabial folds.
As an injectable dermal filler, the results of JUVÉDERM® treatments are virtually instant. As soon as the product is injected, you’ll see lines, wrinkles, and deep folds start to smooth out. Temporary side effects, such as skin bruising, might make it harder to see the results immediately.
JUVÉDERM® products include:
- JUVÉDERM® XC: For moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, including lines around the nose
- JUVÉDERM® JUVÉDERM® Ultra XC and JUVÉDERM® Volbella®: For lip augmentation and treatment of lines and wrinkles in the lips and perioral area
- JUVÉDERM® Vollure™ XC, JUVÉDERM® Ultra Plus and JUVÉDERM® Ultra Plus XC: For moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, including nasolabial folds
- JUVÉDERM Voluma® XC: For deep injections in the cheek area to correct age-related loss of volume
All types of JUVÉDERM®, except JUVÉDERM® XC and JUVÉDERM® Ultra Plus, contain the anesthetic lidocaine. The anesthetic is added to reduce any discomfort the injections may cause.
How Long Does JUVÉDERM® Last?
JUVÉDERM® lasts much longer than some other injectable dermal filler treatments. Depending on the formula used, results can last up to a year, even two years in some cases.
How Much JUVÉDERM® Do You Need?
The effects of JUVÉDERM® vary depending on several factors. These include your age, and the number and depth of wrinkles, lines, and folds you want to treat. Because of this, it’s not possible to determine what your JUVÉDERM® needs will be, until you have a consultation. When you see one of our board-certified and fellowship-trained cosmetic surgeons or Elaine Ver Halen, MPAS, PA-C for a consultation at DFW Center for Aesthetics and Cosmetic Surgery, your JUVÉDERM® dose is calculated based on your skin condition and the results you want. Whatever your desired results might be, remember that it’s better to have too little JUVÉDERM® rather than too much. If you decide you want to enhance the effect, you can always return for another treatment—but there’s no way to undo the treatment if you feel it was a little too much!
What’s It Like to Get JUVÉDERM®?
JUVÉDERM® is a simple, minimally invasive treatment. During one session, you’ll receive several injections of whichever JUVÉDERM® product you choose into the treatment areas. The full procedure takes between 15 and 60 minutes, depending on which parts of your face are treated. Getting JUVÉDERM® injections can be uncomfortable and possibly a little painful. However, most JUVEDERM products contain lidocaine, a local anesthetic that reduces the discomfort you feel during treatment.
JUVÉDERM® Recovery
After your JUVÉDERM® is over, you’ll be able to go about your day as you normally would. Most people return to work the same day. There are a few things you should avoid for the first 24 hours after getting JUVÉDERM®, as they can worsen your side effects. These include:
- Strenuous activity and exercise
- Extensive heat or sun exposure
- Taking aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs)
- Drinking alcohol
When you get JUVEDERM BOTOX you’ll see the results of the treatment almost instantly. However, side effects such as swelling and bruising might make it harder to see right away how your skin has improved. Don’t be alarmed if this happens. Once the side effects subside, you’ll see the results of JUVÉDERM® more clearly!
JUVÉDERM® Side Effects
For most people, JUVÉDERM® causes only minor side effects. The most common include:
- Redness
- Swelling
- Bruising
- Tenderness
- Itching
- Pain at injection sites
In most cases, these side effects are mild, but can last a couple of weeks. In some people, side effects might last longer—around two to four weeks. There is a risk of serious complications, which can occur if Juvederm Botox is injected into a blood vessel. This happens extremely rarely, but may lead to permanent scarring, blindness, or stroke. For this reason, only choose to get injectable treatment from someone who is trained and experienced. Note: If you’re having Juvederm Botox treatment for a special event, schedule it well in advance. Depending on the treatment you have, it may take up to four weeks for swelling and redness to fully subside.
Juvéderm Risks and Complications
JUVÉDERM® products are made using hyaluronic acid, which is naturally present in the skin. It’s safe for most people to have JUVÉDERM®, but for some it’s best to avoid or delay using these injectables. For instance, because the effects of using Juvederm Botox when pregnant or nursing are unknown, these products should be avoided when pregnant or nursing.
Allergic Reactions
JUVÉDERM® is not a toxin, but it can cause adverse allergic reactions in rare cases. For this reason, some people should avoid all JUVÉDERM® products. This includes people who:
- Have multiple allergies or severe allergies, or a history of such allergies
- Have had one or more anaphylactic reactions to any substance
- Are allergic to gram-positive bacterial proteins
If you’re allergic to lidocaine, you’ll only be able to use JUVEDERM XC and JUVÉDERM® Ultra Plus, as all other products contain lidocaine.
Your JUVÉDERM® Consultation
At your BOTOX JUVEDERM consultation with DFW Center for Aesthetics and Cosmetic Surgery, you’ll see your doctor or Elaine Ver Halen, MPAS, PA-C, at the DFW Center for Aesthetics and Cosmetic Surgery office. They will talk to you about which JUVEDERM product is best for your needs, explain what you can expect from treatment, and answer any questions you have.
At your consultation, you should let Elaine or your doctor know if you have any current or recent skin problems, like:
- Pimples
- Cold sores
- Hives
- A rash
- An infection
If you do have any skin issues, it’s best to avoid JUVÉDERM® to prevent them worsening or affecting the outcome of your treatment.
It’s also important to mention if you use any medications, especially if you regularly take aspirin or NSAIDs or if you use any medications that affect your immune system.
