Dermal Fillers and other injectables are some of the most popular cosmetic treatments. They don’t involve surgery, and there’s very little recovery time. Many injectable procedures take 30 minutes or less.
What Are Dermal Fillers and Injectables?
Injectables are a kind of cosmetic treatment where minute amounts of beauty-enhancing products are injected into or under the skin. The first kind of injectable treatment was collagen protein, used to plump the skin and give it a smoother appearance. Next came Botox. Then other types of injectable fillers were brought to market to treat lines and volume loss in the face. From just one or two injectable beauty treatments, there are now well over a dozen of these non-surgical cosmetic treatments. They include:
- Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers
- Biostimulating injectables
- Fat reduction injectable
- Treatments for varicose veins and hair loss
Injectables Versus Cosmetic Surgery
Filler and neurotoxin are often combined with plastic surgery of the face. A surgical facelift treats skin laxity but does not address areas of volume loss. That’s where injectables can be beneficial, and they don’t involve the prep or recovery time of surgery. Injectables are used by people of all ages. Men and women in their early twenties and thirties take advantage of them for prevention purposes. When used consistently, they can help maintain your skin’s youthful appearance. And they provide the advantages of being quick, minimally invasive treatments with almost no downtime. Some injectables are no more time-intensive than having a facial!
Who Is Eligible for Dermal Fillers and Other Injectables?
To be a good candidate for injectable treatments, you should be:
- Physically healthy
- A non-smoker
- Not pregnant or nursing
- Committed to maintaining your results through good skincare
- Positive and realistic in your expectations for treatment
How Long Do Treatments Take?
Most in-office injectable treatments are completed quickly. After the patient uses optional numbing cream for 20 to 30 minutes, the skin is cleansed and injectables are performed. A neurotoxin session session takes around 10 minutes. For Kybella®, it’s a little longer—around 20 minutes per session. Facial fillers can take 45 to 90 minutes, depending on the number of injections in the session. Treatments such as microneedling and sclerotherapy involve more than having a series of injections. Each of these treatments typically takes an hour or more. While the treatments themselves vary in length, they’re all similar in terms of how invasive they are. In general, these are minimally invasive, with very little recovery time needed. In most cases, you can get right back to your normal routine within a few hours!
How Long Do Treatments Last?
With the exception of Kybella and sclerotherapy, these treatments are temporary. Depending on the specific injectable, treatment effects last from four months to two years or more.
Types of Dermal Fillers & Injectables
Belotero Balance®
This dermal filler is a hyaluronic acid preparation, used to treat moderate to severe nasolabial folds. The nasolabial folds are the folds that extend from the sides of the nose to the corners of the lips. Belotero Balance® is a gel, which makes it more effective at treating deep folds than some other facial fillers.
Botox®
Botox® is the original brand name for botulinum toxin, a bacterial toxin that causes muscle paralysis. When injected into facial muscles, this has the effect of smoothing out overlying skin. This injectable is most often used to relax frown lines on the forehead, and crows-feet wrinkles around the eyes.
Dysport®
Dysport® is a preparation of botulinum toxin. Like similar preparations, this injectable is used to temporarily treat frown lines and wrinkles. In particular, Dysport is indicated for glabellar lines, which form between the eyebrows.
Juvéderm®
A hyalauronic acid dermal filler, used to increase dermal volume and out overlying skin. With fine lines and wrinkles smoothed out, the skin looks younger. This filler can be used to smooth wrinkles, plump the lips, or lift and contour the cheeks. Injections of Juvéderm® last for up to 18 months.
- Volbella®: A special preparation designed for the lips. Volbella® is a lighter hyaluronic acid formula used to plump the lips with a subtle, natural-looking effect. It’s also injected in the lip area to smooth fine lines that appear around the mouth.
- Ultra XC: Lasts approximately 12 months and is indicated for lip augmentation
- Ultra Plus XC: An injectable gel that lasts approximately 12 months and is indicated for the treatment of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds
- Voluma®: Lasts about 18 months and treats volume loss in cheeks
- Vollure™: Lasting approximately 18 months, it is indicated for treatment of moderate to severe facial folds and wrinkles.
Kybella®
This fat-busting molecule can reduce submental fat, to decrease the size of a double chin. A typical course of injections is between 2 and 6 injections. Unlike other injectables, Kybella® gives permanent results, even if you gain weight in the future. Kybella® destroys fat cells in that area, so they can’t ever regrow.
Radiesse®
Radiesse is composed of calcium hydroxyapatite microspheres suspended in an aqueous gel carrier. It is a biostimulating type of filler. Over time, Radiesse continues to stimulate your own natural collagen. It is used to treat the hands, lift the cheeks, and remedy deep nasolabial folds. Radiesse has been shown to last 12 to 18 months.
Revanesse® VersaTM
Revanesse® VersaTM is a hyaluronic acid dermal filler, for the treatment of nasolabial folds, and other moderate to severe facial folds and wrinkles. The VersaTM formula has unique spherical particles that helps reduce facial swelling after treatment, and may contribute to improved longevity of treatment effects.
Restylane®
This hyaluronic acid filler has several preparations for different areas of the face. The original formula is designed to treat moderate to severe facial folds and wrinkles. Restylane® injections typically last 6 to 9 months.
- DefyneTM: For nasolabial folds and marionette lines, which extend from the corners of the mouth to the chin
- Restylane-L®: Used to help smooth moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds. It is also approved for the lips.
- LyftTM: Adds volume to cheeks and hands to smooth the skin and provide a more youthful look. Also used to treat aging hands.
- RefyneTM: A new formula for nasolabial folds and marionette lines, designed to support natural facial expressions
- SilkTM: Designed to plump thinning lips and smooth wrinkles around the mouth
Sclerotherapy
Sclerotherapy is a treatment for varicose veins and spider veins. It’s particularly useful for smaller veins. In this treatment a special solution is injected into the varicose vein. The solution causes the vein to form scar tissue, which forces blood to reroute to undamaged veins. Over a few weeks, the scarred vein collapses, breaks down, and fades. The treated vein disappears permanently, but the treatment doesn’t prevent the formation of new varicose veins.
Sculptra®
Sculptra® is an injectable dermal filler, but unlike most other dermal filler treatments, it doesn’t use hyaluronic acid. Instead, Sculptra® is a biostimulating filler. It involves a course of up to four injections of poly-L-lactic acid. Once injected into the skin, it promotes natural collagen replenishment. The results develop gradually and can last over 2 years.
SkinPen® Microneedling
SkinPen® is the world’s first FDA-approved microneedling device, used to treat acne facial scars. In this treatment a microneedle is used to introduce microinjuries to the skin. This promotes natural healing, and “remodels” scar tissue. A typical course of treatment consists of 3 treatments, 30 days apart. Results last for around 6 months after the last treatment.
Xeomin®
Xeomin® is a botulinum toxin preparation used to treat frown lines. This injectable works in the same way as other botulinum preparations, paralyzing the treated muscle to smooth out overlying skin. Xeomin is made using a unique method that filters out unnecessary proteins, to provide a purer toxin formulation.
